Amsterdam cemeteries
1984 | The Amsterdam Fund for the Arts gives documentary photography assignments every year to capture aspects of Amsterdam.

Cemeteries are parks on the outskirts of the city where the dead are buried. As the city expands, the cemetery is closed, the graves cleared and there are new cemeteries on the new outskirts of the city. Sports fields and allotment complexes in growing cities have the same fate.

Gardeners do the work there, but preferably as invisible as possible due to the special character of the place. However, it is a 'normal company' with coffee breaks and Sinterklaas celebrations. There is a strict separation between the front and back of the business.

In 1994 the book appeared on the occasion of the centenary of the New Eastern Cemetery Een plaats van rust en bezinning.
