Highways in the Netherlands
1996 | In 1995 and 1996, Cary Markerink and Theo Baart worked on the project with journalist Tracy Metz Highway> Highways in the Netherlands.

The highway has long been seen as a forgotten landscape. In this project we wanted to emphasize the significance of this place. Highway is a collection of impressions, subjects and objects that together give meaning to this asphalted place that connects other places.

The first exhibition of Highway was in 1996 in the Kunsthal in Rotterdam. In 2007 was Highway> Highways in the Netherlands was included in the traveling exhibition about the 'artificial landscape' Nature as Artifice. Highway was shown in the Kröller-Müller Museum (2007), Neuen Pinakothek Munich, Germany (2008), George Eastman House Rochester, NY (2009) and Aperture Gallery, New York, NY (2009). In 2016 Highway was part of the retrospective on photography and the car, AutoPhoto in Fondation Cartier in Paris.

Highways in the Netherlands is included in Parr and Badger The Photobook: A History - Volume 2.

A selection from Highway is in the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
